Stress and Hives

 Stress and Hives

Many people wonder how stress and Hives are related to each other but according to a research, stress can also trigger the presence of hives in the body. Hives are caused by the release of a specific substance called histamine in the mast cells of the body. Hives are skin allergic reaction which appears as red, itchy raised areas on the skin. These are often caused by the allergic reaction by certain things like food, medication, insect bites, etc. Hives appear as clusters and usually located on the arms, back and legs. Recurring hives change their shapes and location every time they appear. These hives can be very much itchy and also may cause burning sensation to the patient.

Many medical studies have revealed that stress and emotional distress along with allergy can be a cause for hives. A person in stress produces adrenalin, cortisol along with a special hormone called VIP (Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide). as stress increases the amount of VIP also increases. the increased amount of VIP in the body can damage some important tissues in the blood at a fast rate. With the increase in the VIP hormones, the mast cells tend to release the histamine in large amount which in turn cause the hives. moreover it is found that a person suffering from hives will be having elevated levels of stress.

Stress and Hives can also be correlated by the fact that women are twice likely to suffer from hives and stress is quite usual in women. Also a hives patient would not be able to sleep well and lack of proper sleep also increases the stress related hormones again. Now, the question arises how to treat the stress induced hives. the general approach of treating the hives is to try to eliminate the source of allergen. usually a patient is asked about his lifestyle, food habits, pets, etc. apart from these anti histamine drug like Benadryl and Claritin is also given to the patient.

However in case of stress related hives anti histamine drug remains ineffective and as long as the patient remains in stress the problem can’t be solved. So, a correct approach will be to join a de-stressing program where breathing techniques and some yoga postures will be teach to the patient. the whole aim is to try to reduce the cortisol and other stress hormones inside the body. With the decreased levels of stress hormones, hives can be easily disappear from the skin at a faster rate.
